Stewart's work in marine art has seen him build up a fine reputation throughout the art world. His career as a professional artist in his native East Yorkshire spans more than five decades. Stewart grew up and lived only yards from the river Humber in Hull, East Yorkshire, where throughout the years he enjoyed all the inspiration needed for his art.

Other subjects in Stewart's repertoire include river scenes, landscapes, street scenes and portraiture. His street scenes are particularly sought after, perhaps because of the characters that inhabit Stewart's imagination - skilfully juxtaposed to give the impression of everyday life.
